Snuff bottles are esteemed for their high art quality in both East and West, originating from the Qing Dynasty of China in the early 1700s when the emperor himself bestowed them as gifts. In Chinese culture, the crane, synonymous with the heron, is a symbol of long life, nobility, and unceasing love and allegiance, as demonstrated by its inclusion in costumes of different ranks in the imperial era.

Provenance: From an estate in Tennessee, this jade bottle was included in a box of items labeled and dated from the 1940s with a short writing from that time that these items were brought back after WWII by the estate's original owner and the family confirmed this. The actual age is unknown, could be from the early to mid-nineteenth century when there was a greater demand for bottles and the growth of regional workshops grew to meet demand.
