    Ikki was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1935 to a well-known cartoonist and children's book illustrator Katsuji Matsumoto. At the age of 20, Ikki traveled to the United States to study at the John Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. He later transferred to the Art Academy of Cincinnati to study under the renowned wildlife artist Charles Harper.

    In 1975 Iki moved to Sanibel Island, Florida where he established a new career as a painter and printmaker using the native birds as his subjects. 1985 Ikki was one of 50 artists chosen by first lady Nancy Reagan to paint an Easter Egg. It is now in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum. The C&S National Bank on Sanibel Island commissioned 30 original paintings which are on public display throughout their building. It is the largest corporate collection of Ikki's work On December 31, 2013, Ikki passed away just one day before his 79th birthday.
